Utah Travel Center BLM Lands • Moab District

Southeastern Utah - 5,805,426

Many of southeastern Utah's outstanding recreation opportunities are in the Moab District. Popular recreational rivers include the Colorado, the Green and the San Juan. Natural arches, Native American rock art and remote campsites are found in the San Rafael Swell, Book Cliff Mountains, Grand Gulch Plateau, and Dark Canyon Primitive Area. In Emery County, the San Rafael Swell is an oval-shaped uplift known to early geologists as The Red Amphitheater; many colorful geological oddities may be found there. Guided tours of the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, which is one of the world's foremost dinosaur fossil sources, are provided from Easter through Memorial Day. The Kokopelli Mountain Bike Trail travels 140 miles between Loma, Colorado and Moab, Utah. BLM's internationally known Slickrock Bike Trail is also near Moab. The Canyon Rims Recreation Area adjacent to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, features spectacular views of the Needles, the miles of surrounding redrock desert, and the Colorado River. The recreation area also has hundreds of 4-wheel-drive-vehicle routes and hiking trails.

The Moab Field Office is located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau. For thousands of years, water and gravity have applied erosive forces sculpting, carving, and shaping the area's painted canyons. North of Moab is the Colorado Riverway. Visitors may tour two of Utah's Scenic Byways, camp and enjoy hundreds of square miles of BLM lands. Contact 82 E. Dogwood, Moab, UT 84532, 435-259-6111.

The Monticello Field Office is located in the southeast corner of Utah and is part of the Colorado Plateau region. Dominating the landscape near Monticello are the Abajo Mountains, BLM land surrounds this huge monolith. South of the Abajos is the Comb Ridge Monocline, a major crustal uplift about 80 miles in length. Nearby this major uplift is Grand Gulch, which cuts a serpentine swath through Cedar Mesa. The Anasazi Indians left a legacy that includes hundreds of cliff dwellings and thousands of pictographs and petroglyphs. Contact 435 N. Main, Monticello, UT 84535 435-587-1500.
