Leeds (Washington County) is southeast of the Pine Valley mountains on I-15. The community became an outgrowth of nearby Harrisburg when settlers from Leeds, Yorkshire, England, moved to the site in 1867. The original name was Bennington, in honor of Benjamin Stringham, the presiding Mormon elder. He recommended the name be changed to Leeds. (John W. Van Cott)
