Construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1867
Recognized as a national historic civil engineering landmark
The roof rests on an enourmous inverted bowl on 44 columns of sandstone
The roof is supported by wood arches
The original shingles on the roof were wooden, and were later replaced by sheet tin, then by aluminum.
The building is 250 feet long, 150 feet wide and 80 feet high.
Seats approximately 6,500
The columns and benches are constructed of white pine
The benches were finished to look like oak, and the columns like marble
